Barefoot running...

So there is this not so new fad in running - barefoot running - and on Thursday while jogging with my new jogging partner Karen my knees were hurting. I was talking too much to focus on my form and so after the first mile I decided I was going to take my shoes off. And Karen did too - she's fun. And we ran the next mile with no shoes on. And guess what? My feet didn't hurt and my knee pain went away too! So the next night we went two miles again - the whole way sans shoes. Soo...the whole idea started when we heard the author of this book recommend running with your shoes off for a month or so to correct your form. I guess our shoes can cause us to run incorrectly. Anyhow, I'm going to get that book and I'll tell you more about the theories then. All I know is that my knees didn't hurt AT ALL on Friday and I'm going to run without shoes for the next little while...

p.s. We look like weirdos - two chubby girls running down the sidewalk barefoot...I think people must think we are strange newbies trying to be obnoxious.

Barefoot running is wonderful!! I am also a mom and nursing my youngest still but he is 18 months so only nurses a few times in 24 hours. Anyways I love to run far more that I ever did running with shoes on. I invite you to come hang out at the Runners world barefoot forum. There are several other moms there too! Rock on mama!!

I think that sounds like a fabulous idea. I've always thought the idea of shoes were ridiculous, other than to act as a barrier to keep rocks/thorns out.

I can't imagine running down the sidewalk -- one tiny piece of loose gravel or one thorny sticker weed would be extremely painful. Where do most of these runners run?

i took a running class in college and we ran barefoot once a week. i never knew why or asked. i just thought we were being kooky.

You would be amazed at how clean sidewalks and roads actually are. You just watch where you are going and you have to go very slow in building up mileage to strengthen your feet both muscles and the soles as well. Its so fun to run barefoot!

You could go get some of those cool barefoot running shoes from your local running specialty store. They have a tiny rubber sole to protect your feet but have no support. They even separate your toes naturally, too. They look way fun to me. I love the idea of running barefoot but have dirt issues so the special shoes would have to be the way I would go.

AAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! i just think that's hilarious. if i hadn't read this and saw someone actually running barefoot - i would seriously question their sanity. interesting idea though. . . my knees bother me sometimes when i run - maybe i'll try that sometime.

Hey! Tyan's friend, Ryan (Marissa's husband), just bought these new slip on things for your feet for barefoot running. They have a sole so your feet don't get raw, but they are made for barefoot runners. You should ask her about it!
